Pacifiers lead to nipple confusion?

Hi there! Mostly a lurker on these boards, but wanted to ask a question to see the varying opinions.

 I've read that giving a NB a pacifier in the hospital can lead to nipple confusion which can then lead to a harder time breastfeeding. I've also ready that you should abstain from using a pacifier in the first month.

I'm leaning towards letting the hospital know that I don't want a pacifier for the baby, but I'm wondering, how true is this? Has anyone had experience with this subject?
