Please share your nipple shield experience

Hi Ladies,

I'm a FTM new to this board   My son will be two weeks old tomorrow and we are using a nipple shield.  I am frustrated that I am using this as he did actually latch a couple of times in the hospital without it, but it was easier to use it and now I feel that's he's addicted to it.  I am told to try taking it off in the middle of a feeding, but he becomes frantic without it even if he's not terribly hungry.  One LC is telling me to wait until he gets a little older and another is telling me to get him off it ASAP.  What were your personal experiences?  I have house guests coming when he will be six weeks old and I would love to have weaned him off of it by then because BFing will be more discreet, KWIM? Thanks!
