HPT true or false?

My DH and I had intercourse one day before ovulation [May 20], if I calculated correctly. I am now 6 days late. I took a HPT three days ago, and it came back negative. Was it too early to take a test? I have heard and read differing things about HPT, that although they claim to tell you a certain number of days before the missed period, that sometimes, it won't tell you until a week or two after. Is it true, or is it kind of different for everyone? 

Also, I know it is too early to start experiencing symptoms, but when do you actually start noticing them? Is it around four weeks? When does your belly start bloating? I've heard the norm with the first baby, the bump starts showing around 20 weeks. How soon do you notice bloating?
