Flying with my pump

I'm going to be taking a short trip for work next week.  I will be taking my carry on bag, computer bag, and pump.  Does anyone know if the pump counts as your personal item or if you get the exception for carrying on an extra bag due to medical necessity or something?  I'd rather not check my luggage, but my airport does crack down on number of carry ons. 

I haven't figured out how I'm getting my pumped milk home yet either.  I thought about storing the milk in freezer bags and carrying those home in a softsided cooler, but that's another bag.
