Messy while feeding

Does anyone else's lo make a big mess while eating? When I first put ds on he tends to come on and off for the first few minutes until he gets into a comfortable rhythm. So milk goes everywhere.  I'm not sure how to make him stop doing this. And I feel bad when milk is squirting him in the face or all over.
