Distracted 5.5 month old question

In the last week, E's nursing sessions went from 5-7min to almost non existent.  I was lucky to get him latched and nursing for 2-3 min during the day, and he constantly popped on and off.  I thought I had eliminated all the distractions (no TV, no talking, DH quiet, etc), but he was still distracted by looking out the window, our puppy, my shirt, my hair, everything it seemed!

 I finally started going upstairs to his nursery, with the lights off for every nursing, and it worked like magic.  He had much longer nursing sessions and was no longer popping on and off.  My question is - will it always be like this now?  Will I always have to find a quiet, dark place to nurse E or will he outgrow this stage?  I'm not worried about nursing when we are home, but we are traveling a bunch this summer and I don't know how feasible it will be to always find a quiet / dark place to nurse.
