How do you wean from nipple shields?

I was told by a LC that most babies wean themselves from nipple shields at about a month. Being my daughter didn't really get the hang of bf until about 3 weeks, I figured it would be about 2 months for her. She's now almost 4 months and still using it. If she knocks it off or I try without it, she sucks a couple of times and then crys and won't nurse until it is put on. I would really like to not need it anymore as it is one more thing to clean all the time and I think it would be more natural without it..
