is it ok for a newborn to sleep in a pack and play/play yard

I do not have a bassinet and I feel as though I may not need one. Am I being crazy? I'm not a cheap person but for some odd reason I cannot justify purchasing a bassinet where I only plan on using it for a short while. Is it ok to have a newborn sleep in a pack and play/play yard next to my bed or is that not the right thing to do? I've heard of some people using the pack and play next to their bed during the first few weeks. Has anyone else done this? What was your experience? What are your opinions? Thanks!
