Confused about pump flange size

I have no idea if I'm using the right flange size for the Medela PIS. I have the 24mm it came with and I purchased the next size larger the 27mm. With the 24 I experienced some nipple blanching so I thought I needed a bigger size. But with the 27 I'm getting a pink tender ring at the base of the nipple. Any one have any suggestions?
