One nipple on fire, the other is fine. Help!

Not sure what happened- but the other night my left breast became engorged in the middle of the night. Every since it is incredibly painful when LO latches on even though it is no longer engorged! Like cry out loud painful. It's not cracked- it's not the surface area- it's like the pain is deeper. Meanwhile the right nipple is like steel- doesn't hurt at all.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing the pain?
