how to get off nipple shield

I started using the shield while we were still in the hospital. It has worked great. She is three weeks old and gaining weight great. I would like to stop using the shield but I am not really sure how. I have tried several times but can't get her to latch. After a few tries she gets so upset I just give in and go back to the shield. Any suggestions?
