Placenta/Umbilical Cord question

May 2012 in 3rd Trimester

I had a a growth US done last week at 36 weeks. The doctor mentioned that the umbilical cord is attached to the edge of the placenta instead of in the middle like normal. I asked what that meant, what causes it, is it a problem and she said it means nothing. Does anyone know anything about this?
