Growth scans

I am 30 weeks this week and I was told at my 20 week appointment that there would be no more ultrasounds.  My older sister (who is pregnant and two months ahead of me) said that her doctors give growth ultrasounds to determine the position of the baby and the weight. 

At my appointment today, I asked the doctor about growth scans and she confirmed what I already thought...we will get no more ultrasounds.  She said they can tell the baby's position and guess the weight just as easily without a scan.  Is this normal? How many of you stopped getting ultrasounds very early on?
