painful period-like cramping?

Im 32 weeks and I have had what feels like period cramps on and off which first started a few days ago. On Sunday it was painful and very uncomfortable and lasted about an hour and a half. I was going to call the doc but they went away. I have noticed them coming and going since then. I have had braxton hicks before where everything tightens up but those arent painful. These period-like cramps are painful, but im not bleeding or anything. I called the doc and am awaiting his return phone call. Figured I would ask and see if anyone had experience with this???
