What do I need baby clothes wise?

How do I know how much of what I am going to need?! We received a ton of baby clothes at the baby shower ranging from NB-12 mon. but how many of what, will I actually need for him in his first couple of months? How long do they stay in NB clothes?

Sorry if these are stupid questions but I've never had to shop for someone whose entire wardrobe changes every 3 months lol.
