Moving from a hospital grade pump to a regular electric pump

I struggled with low supply when DS was a baby, and I'm really hoping things will go better with the baby. When I was breastfeeding DS, I would breastfeed and then pump with a hospital grade pump to try to keep up my supply, and get a little milk in reserve. At one point, I tried to switch from the hospital grade pump I was renting to a Medela electric pump. I couldn't get any milk with the regular pump, and ended up returning it as defective. I think my breast were the defective component though. Is it possible for breast to get used to one type of pump and not work with another type?

I will be working full time with baby number 2, and I was planning to rent a hospital grade pump the first month, and then buy my pump for work, but now I'm wondering if I should start out with the pump I plan to use full time for the best results.
