How to hand express?

Ive heard that some people can get more BM if they hand express after pumping. I've been trying the marmet technique but I don't think I'm doing it right because I'm not getting anything. I watched a couple of you tube videos, but I'm just not getting anything. Has anyone else had trouble and figured it out?  Any tips or other techniques I can try. I don't feel like the pump is getting my completely empty so I think I could benefit from hand expressing, plus it's a good skill to have for emergencies, it just annoys me that I can't figure it out.
