checking your own cervix

I read an article yesterday about it's becoming more and more of the thing to do to be aware of your body and many women are checking their own cervix just so they are aware what it feels like and as it changes.  I can't imagine finding mine at the moment and getting around this belly, nor would I really know what to look for and the idea of doing it kind of creeps me out...I'd hate to actually feel the baby's head or something...that'd be strange to me.  Has anyone or is anyone actually doing this?  It really peeked my interest to know if this is actually happening or just a fluff article I read.
