How long is LO feeding...help?

So I am BF, also having to supplement with formula since he wasn't gaining enough weight.  My LO nurses for at least 30 minutes on each side, definitely not satisfied with just one side.  So it takes at least an hour to feed him.  Is this at all normal?  He seems to be actively nursing during the time, and if he starts to fall asleep, I'll either wake him, or pull him off, since I don't want to be his pacifier.  Any help is appreciated!!!!!
