Does cervical checking really increase the risk for infection? (Any medical professionals, feel fre

I've heard two different sides.  One says yes, the other says no.  Both from medical professionals.  (Yes from a midwife, No from a doctor.)  I'm inclined to believe yes because, well, if anything goes up there it can take anything with it.  I'm confused as to why the doctor would say no...even if she just wanted to "do her job" she still has the ethical right to give informed consent.  So I'm curious.  What have you heard?
