baby shower gift question

DH's cousin and his wfie is having a baby.  Noone told us until we got an invitation to her shower, turns out she's due 4 days after me.

I cannot make it to the shower (it's 7 hours away in 4 weeks) and her registry is really expensive.  Obviously it's her perogative but literally the only thing on it below $200 is a pack of breastmilk storage bags.  For his other cousins I've made them all a quilt for their firstborn and sent something off the registry.  

I see so many people here complaining about getting gifts not from their registry.

Is it that awful if I just send a quilt with a "sorry I couldn' t make it but congratulations card". FWIW, I've met the girl one time and we weren't invited to their wedding in August so I barely even know her.
