Pumping near LO - a bad idea?

I rarely have time to pump because sweet LO needs to nap on me during the day and I am therefore holding her almost constantly from when she wakes in the am to when DH gets home at 7 PM. (Let me add, I love the cuddle time, but I am concerned about pumping).

The other night, after a feeding DH was soothing her to sleep in her nursery, and I was in our bedroom pumping.  She woke a few mintues after i started and begain to wail.  I had to stop pumping and feed her in order to calm her down.  Our bedroom is across the hall from the nursery, and I had the door shut - but I'm wondering if she could smell the milk as I was pumping?  Even though I was more than 20 feet away, should I not be pumping so close to LO?
