Laid Back Breastfeeding?

I read a lot about this during my pregnancy and was excited to try it out.  It's supposed to be good for newborns, from what I read.

I can't get it to work!  I've tried different angles and my son just bobs around and if he does manage to get onto my breast, his nose is all smooshed into my boob and he can't breath.  He'll be one week old tomorrow.

They made it sound like you just lay the baby on your stomach and they just magically attach themselves.  

Am I doing things wrong?
