social security for surviving child

do any of you know anything about this in NY state?  We are going Thursday to apply for nephew. I know the documents that we need to bring and I know that the eligibility is for children whose parent was working long enough to pay social security. My sister in-law was a nurse and only worked for over a year before she passed. My  brother is currently laid off. We don't know what to expect percentage wise.

What experience do you have or know about how this works? TIA
