How to help the transition from living with grandparents?

We're moving out of my parents house after 2.5 years and DS isn't handling it very well. We won't be moving for another month, but I'm trying to prepare DS in advance.

He adores his grandfather and doesn't understand why he can't live with him forever. We'll only be twenty minutes away, my parents want the kids every other weekend, and there's always Skype, but DS is heartbroken.

Has anyone else had experience with this? I'm hoping the build up is way worse than the actual moving. I just hate seeing my little guy so sad.
