stupid ? about thrush

Are there any consequences or thrush other than boob pain? My DS had an obvious case between about 2-3 months (first on the tongue, then on the lips). He was on nystatin (I also rubbed it on my boobs) and it went away and came back a couple times and then was gone. I never had any symptoms thank god. He's now 6.5 months and there may be a tiny patch on his cheek - hard for me to see. I am inclined not to treat it - it doesn't seem to bother him. Are there other issues with thrush that I need to know about? Seems like the treatment might be worse than the problem as he hated the nystatin.
