Extended BF benefits?

What are the benefits for both mom and baby of extended BFing?  I'm willing to go more than a year, and I think DD will want to.  DH is not so sure about it but he'll support me if that's the decision I make.  I assume I might get a question or two if we do go past a year so I'd like to have something to tell people when they ask "why," besides "because I want to."
