How early do I need to look into day care?

We aren't due until May 2nd but I was wondering about this.

I am in Canada so we won't need day care for about 1 year.

DH and I had originally planned on trying to make arrangements with our family friend who is a SAHM to look after LO when I go back to work but due to where they live it might not happen.

ANYWAY, there is a day care (YMCA - government regulated) that is literally over the fence from my work. Like our parking lot and theirs are attached. They won't take LO until 18 months and I was wondering when I should start inquiring or trying to get on a waiting list. I feel like doing it now might be too soon (LO won't be going for 19 months or so lol).
