Had a doula but still got pain medication?

I plan to have pain medication (please don't judge) because I have a really really low pain tolerance. I've been very anxious about labor and delivery because of the pain. I've been researching doulas to help cope with pain, but I'm wondering if they'll be helpful/worth it, even if I plan on getting pain medication. (I heard you can't get pain medication until you get to a certain point anyway.)

We can afford one, but of course, if it's not worth it, we'd rather keep the money. On the other hand, I don't want to decide against it just because of money.

Any ladies out there who had a doula and still had pain medication?
