A registry/nursery question

Now that we know we are having a boy I am anxious to start working on the nursery and was going to buy all the nursery stuff (bedding, decorations, etc.) myself but my husband said "isn't that stuff that can go on the registry?".  It is but if we wait until the shower to get this stuff we will do nothing with the nursery because we need to see the items in person (they are only available online) to coordinate paint and furniture.  So my question is did you buy your nursery items yourself or are you putting them on your registry for others to purchase for you?

ETA: We don't plan to put any nursery furniture on the registry.
