Exposing baby to people...how old should the baby be

Hi!

How long after a baby is born is it ok to expose a baby to a large group of people? Is there a general rule, certain guidelines to follow?

If he is exposed to a group (we are planning on attending a BBQ in June, baby due early May) is there a nice way to tell people they need to wash their hands before touching?

Am I already turning into a neurotic Mama!?
