Matress Pads and Sheet Savers?

We went to Babies R Us this weekend and opened a registry!  We were using the list they gave us as a guide but there was a few things I questioned.

Are any of you investing in "water proof matress pads" or "sheet savers" for your baby?  I like the idea of hopefully saving the sheets/matress from stains..etc.  However, I thought we weren't supposed to put anything at all in the crib other than baby and fitted sheet?

What are your plans for these?  I'm leaning towards skipping them for now and see how it goes....
