if I don't have a Kitchen Aid mixer, can I use a hand mixer?

I'm wanting to make this and it calls for an electric mixer with a paddle attachment.  I don't have that!  I don't bake enough to justify buying a $200 piece of equipment that I'll only use a handful of times a year.  Can I use a hand mixer or should I just give up before I start?  Sigh.
