Need pelvic exam description please!!!!

February 2012 in 3rd Trimester

So a woman at work told me that starting around 34 weeks the doctor would be performing a pelvic exam that involved putting their entire hand up there. Is this true? She is kind of a jokester so I didn't know whether to believe her or not. I have never heard of this before. I need details please!!!!
