Baby Shower - When do friends offer to host?

I've read all the posts with regards to baby shower etiquette, and I understand that it is "not done" to host your own. I'm from overseas and don't have any close friends where I live, so I can't imagine anyone is going to suggest hosting one. The advice I keep seeing over and over is "try to hint around that you don't have anyone to host you a baby shower". I will try to do this, but I'm wondering at what point I should just decide to host my own despite the stigma and/or give up on the idea of having a baby shower altogether. Roughly how long into the pregnancy do friends or acquaintances usually offer to host a shower?
