Sudafed Extended Release? not sure

Did anyone's doctor say if the extended release sudafed is okay or not?  I have a terrible cold and have been taking the regular sudafed, DH just went out and bought a box but it's the extended release and I'm not sure if that's okay to take.  It's not the Sudafed PE though.  I think I'm going to send him back for the non-extended release since that's on my approved list, I was just wondering if anyone knew for sure.
