Checking your own dilation???

Ok so I read in a random article online about this lady who was having her 3rd child, 2nd home birth. She was miss natural everything, zero intervention type of woman. But she was talking about how she and her DH checked her dilation themselves in her last home birth and they had every intention of doing that again for her 3rd...

I didn't think you could really do that. I mean I suppose when you're TTC you often learn the position and feel of your cervix... just seems like an odd concept to me!
