If you had an episiotomy before, did your OB tell you that they were performing one?

When I had my daughter my OB gave me an episiotomy. I thought I had tearing because after I was done pushing he informed me that they were going to begin stitching me up. I asked "Did I tear" and he replied "Yes, only a small 2nd degree tear". Later my husband asked "Do you know what happened?" and when I said no he informed me that the OB gave me an episiotomy. He said from what he could tell it looked like he really needed to do it, but it still bothers me a little that the doctor never told me he was performing one and did not even mention it when I asked. 

Is that odd or just standard? Were you told?
