episiotomy questions

I have plenty of fears of labor and delivery but I've been hearing from many women that episiotomies are the worst part. This information mostly comes from women who have had natural childbirths. Even women that had epidurals say that it's the toughest healing from one. About how many women get them, % wise? Also, I hear that there are things you can do to try and prevent having one. Is it really that bad (I'm sure it is)? I wish I wasn't feeling so afriad. I mean I've gone through many stitches throughout my life. I've had 20 in my forehead but something tells me that because of the location that this may be worse. I appreciate any experiences that you'd like to share.
