Anyone with pain in the kidney region?

The other day I had excruciating achey pain in my lower back around where my kidneys are. It was throbbing and it lasted about 3 minutes. It was hard to even breathe through it. I had it again, not as bad as that time, last night and it woke me up. The last time I remember having this was when I was pregnant previously. Does anyone know what this is or had it also?
