on top or vag? when do they switch?

This may seem like a silly question, but I'm a first timer here. I'm 12 weeks pregnant and not showing, just a little pudge. But I was wondering when they start doing the "on top of the belly" ultrasounds vs. the vaginal ultrasounds? I guess I haven't been far enough a long yet to do the belly ones, but was wondering when they switched? How long do you have to be for them to be able to see something from the belly? I always picture the movies where the tech squirts the stuff all over the belly and everybody smiles and tears up when they see the little one I'll take it either way, as long as I can see my healthy baby, BUT it's definatley not comfy when I have my husband and sister in the room LOL
