Internal Exam Question

I've been having a lot of BH's and bad back spasms so my dr did an ultrasound and found I have extra amniotic fluid and my cervix started to shorten. She wanted to do an internal exam because she said that was the best way to check to see if I was dilated.

It hurt so bad, I wanted to scream! She said, wow, there is so much pelvic pressure that she wasn't even able to get her fingers to my cervix to check.  Have any of you had that issue? I was in so much pain I didn't think to really ask what that meant. TIA
