is Lamaze really necessary?

I am totally shocked by how much the Lamaze, Childbirth preparedness, infant care/feeding, and Infant CPR classes cost (note, that's 4 separate classes "provided" by my hospital). Seriously! That's nuts! I guess I just never thought about it or maybe I assumed it was covered by the insurance... but I'm having a hard time accepting that $250+ for classes are necessary for something that I can read in a $20 book and that people have been doing instinctively for generations!

New parents... please weigh in: Is it really necessary?! Was it money well spent or do you feel as though you were prepared without it?
