Medala pump-clueless

Got this and many other things in the mail today and am overwhelmed as I clueless how to use it all So I put the pump together and turned it on-all it seemed like was light air pulling but barely. How in the world dies this extract milk? Maybe I put it together wrong? Also are we supposed to wash the plate as well after every use???? Sounds like alot?
