Anyone using support hose to help prevent varicose veins?

I have started to develop really ugly varicose veins on my upper calf just below my knee on one leg.  I am predisposed to them and have a few spider veins behind my knees from before this pregnancy and my mom has them too.  

I am trying to prevent them from getting worse.  One of the things that I was considering was getting support hose.  I've read that it is best to put them on before you even leave bed.  Well I have to shower in the AM so I am not sure how that will work.

Anyone use them?  What are your experiences?  Thoughts?
