If I have to supplement with formula...

I have been having some milk supply problems recently as well as having problems with needing to pump and dump because of medications I am taking. Because of this I am concerned that there might come a time when I don't have enough milk for DS. I have been thinking about supplementing with formula, and may start trying to figure out what formula works for him. I have a question though - if I have to supplement with formula would he eat the same number of ounces of formula as he would with a bottle of breastmilk? Right now I have to pump and bottle feed DS so I also know exactly how much he eats. I am just not sure how formula supplementing works.
