Sleep/Nap transition

I have a 1 month old and since he was born we have been holding him to get him to fall asleep and then putting him in a bassinet/crib once he is a sleep.  We have been doing this for Nap and night time sleeping.  I would like to get him to fall asleep on his own in the crib...but I need advice!!! Right now when I put him in there awake he screams forever...  Any advice would be great!
