bassinet/moses basket question

Do you think a bassinet/moses basket type thing is necessary in addition to buying a crib? Does a newborn have to go in a bassinet first? Or can it go directly in the crib. I would be putting the crib in our bedroom in the beginning if I didn't have a bassinet. It seems like a huge waste of $300 for a bassinet that is only going to be used for 3 months. Also for those moses basket things do you just put that on the floor?
