Water and newborns.

I haven't talked to my pediatrician about giving dd water, and she hasn't said anything, but a friend of mine has a 7 month old and she said her pediatrician told her to start giving her dd a little water if she'd take it (when she was almost to the 3 month mark as well). But I've also read you're not supposed to... Does anyone else have any insight on this? My dd is 11 weeks.
