dry skin and lotion recommendations

My LO has extremely dry skin. Her newborn skin had cleared up (no more acne, etc...) and now with all this dry weather she has dry patchy skin on her elbows and thighs. I was using just good old johnson and johnson and then switched to oil for a day. It seemed like the oil made her redder I stopped using that and now I am using aveeno unscented baby lotion. I put it on her twice a day. Do you have a lotion that you have found to be better than another? Should I use a mist humidifier? What about just leaving a bowl of water sitting around somewhere, does that help with dry air? (mom's suggestion..) Tips and advice please!!
